Video Conference
The third graders participated in a video conference with the Indianapolis Zoo on Friday, June 1st. During the video conference the students could talk to and see someone who works at the zoo. They were also able to see animals in a desert habitat at the zoo. They learned how the zoo makes habitats for the animals and how they take care of the animals. It was a great learning experience for the students!

Mock Caldecott Voting
Roosevelt students learned about the Caldecott Award that is given to the book with the best illustrations. They learned about the criteria a book must meet to win the award. Then they looked at five books being considered for the award. With a group they discussed the book's pictures and made sure each book met the criteria needed to win the award. Each student then voted for the book they thought should win the Roosevelt Caldecott Award. When the votes were counted Hedgie Blasts Off by Jan Brett was the winner. Bats at the Beach by Brian Lies and Flotsam by David Weisner were the Caldecott Honor books.
On January 22nd the real Caldecott winners were announced and they are:
Caldecott Award: Flotsam by David Weisner (Green Meadow Honor Book),
Caldecott Honor: Gone Wild: An Endangered Animal Encyclopedia by David McLimans, and Moses: When Harriet Tubman led her People to Safety by Carole Boston Weatherford and illustrated by Kadir Nelson.
Pajama Day
Bully Busters
Who ya gonna call? Bully Busters!
Roosevelt is starting an anti-bullying program this year. We have monthly assemblies to talk about how we can all be bully busters. Ms. Ellingson's class taught the rest of the school the bully buster song at our last assembly.
Author Visit - Denys Cazet
We had an author and illustrator visit our school on October 4th. Denys Cazet told us that he has been drawing pictures since he was very young. Mr. Cazet writes the Minnie and Moo series and the Elvis the Rooster series. He has also written many other stories for children. During his visit at Roosevelt he drew pictures for us, read us a story, and answered some of our questions. We really enjoyed his visit!
Teacher of the Year
Kathy Lammers, a third grade teacher at Roosevelt, was named the Wal Mart Teacher of the Year for Winnebago County! She was chosen from forty other teachers in the county who were also nominated for the award. Roosevelt recieved a $1,000 check and Mrs. Lammers recieved a $100 Wal Mart gift card for her excellence in teaching. Congratulations Mrs. Lammers!!
UW-O Training Consultant
Amy Deshotels is our UW-O training consultant again this year. We are glad to have her back with us! Knowing the specifics of our computer programs enables our consultant to teach our teachers on a one-on-one basis. In addition, the consultant is able to assist classes in the lab when questions arise.
